Asia de Cuba in South Beach recently unveiled their new Ceviche / Raw Bar and I was there to experience the culinary delight.
Almost immediately upon arriving at the restaurant located within the swanky Mondrian Hotel, the celebration began. As I mingled with fellow bloggers and colleagues, I was greeted with one of the new “ tiraditos” (sashimi’s Peruvian cousin) – the Smoked Salmon on Crispy Spring Onion Pancake. From then on, it was a feast for the senses.
Next up were the ceviches. I took a stab at the Wild Salmon and Salted Avocado Helado with spicy coconut milk, birds eye pepper and black lava salt and the Curry Swordfish and Passion Fruit with lemon oil, toasted coriander seeds and fried capers, each presented beautifully in porcelain Chinese soup spoons and extremely fresh.
Then, with plenty of room in my stomach still, I couldn’t resist a taste of the new Maki Rolls including the Paella with saffron rice, the Cien Fuegos with spicy blue crab and The Cuban with pulled pork belly, each manifesting the perfect marriage of ingredients.
To end my palate party, I finished off the evening with what I would venture to say were my two favorites – the Plantain Mofongo with rock shrimp al ajillo and the Rock Shrimp & Calamari Tempura with micro greens, mirin-aji amarillo aioli and yuzu-truffle dressing.
The crowd was pleased as I’m sure you will be. Now through April 15th you’ll get three varieties of ceviche along with your choice of a mango, berry or classic mojito for 20 bucks.
